Genealogy of the Chesley Family of Durham New Hampshire

A genealogy of the Chesley family of Durham New Hampshire as extracted from the History of Durham New Hampshire and other sources.

First Generation

1

Family of Philip Chesley of Oyster River New Hampshire

Philip Chesley [1]A Philip Chesley died in York County, Virginia, in 1674, a native of Welford, Gloucestershire, where the name is sometimes written Churchly. [See William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. I, p. 86.] witnessed a deed from the Rev. Thomas Larkham to William Waldron, 13 Sept. 1642. He had a house lot of three acres and a half on “High Street,” Dover Neck, which he sold to Thomas Leighton. He and wife, Elizabeth, signed a deed, 7 Aug. 1661. He alone sold to son, Thomas, one half of his lands, etc., 12 Aug. 1663, reserving only the room at the west end of the house. The following year he deeded the rest of his land to his youngest son, Philip, and 7 July 1673, he and his wife, Joan, deeded to son, Philip, sixty acres more. He had a grant, in 1652, of 100 acres “at a place called the Indian graves on the west side of beech hill.” Joan Chesley testified to an event that happened at “our house” in 1667, the loan of a canoe belonging to Thomas Chesley. She had probably before that date become the second wife of Philip Chesley, senior.

July 3, 1699, Mary Chesley and Hester Chesley deeded to Elizabeth Chesley, wife of Thomas, land formerly “our fathers” and since “our brothers.” Philip and Joan Chesley made depositions, 30 April 1685.

The following is found in the records of Dover, Vol. H : “Whereas Philip Chesley Senr Late of Dover deceased had Twenty acres of land and the meadow joining thereunto given by the Towne of Dover in the year (56) Lying and being between Louberland and Oyster River and the sd land is given by deed of gift unto hanah Ash from her two brethren Thomas & Philip Chesley to her and her heires forever and we the subscribers being desired by benjamin Peirce the owner and surviver of sd Land have laid it out as follows,” etc. There is no date, and the signatures are not preserved, but it must have been after 1714. See under Ash.

  1. 2. Thomas Chesley born 1644; married Elizabeth Thomas.
  2. 3. Philip Chesley born 1646; married Sarah _______.
  3. Hannah Chesley married Thomas Ash.

  7. Mary Chesley married William Jones before 1721.

3

Family of Philip Chesley of Oyster River New Hampshire

Philip Chesley (Philip1), born 1646, married Sarah _______. His will, 13 Dec. 1695, names wife, Sarah, sons, Samuel, James, Philip and Ebenezer, “and the rest of my Estate I leave with my wife for the benefit of the children which I leave behind me to disspose of as she See good.” Deeds show that he had also sons, Ichabod and Jonathan, and he had perhaps Lydia. “Sarah Chesley, an aged widow,” was baptized 20 March 1719, by the Rev. Hugh Adams. Philip Chesley was constable in 1695.

  1. 7. Samuel Chesley, “eldest son”; married Elizabeth Smith.

Third Generation

4

Family of Thomas Chesley of Oyster River New Hampshire

Thomas Chesley (Thomas2, Philip1) born 4 June 1664, married Ann _______. He died before 1700. His wife married Joseph Daniel and died before 1704. The following children are known:

  1. 12. George Chesley, the “bachelor,” baptized 24 Dec. 1721; estate administered by brother, Samuel.
  2. Thomas Chesley born 1688. He was aged about 16, 2 Jan. 1704-5, when his uncle, Joseph Chesley, was made his guardian. He probably died at an early age, unmarried.
  3. 13. John Chesley born abt. 1690. He is called “oldest son of Thomas Chesley,” 3 Aug. 1708, indicating perhaps that his brother Thomas was then deceased. He married Hannah Huckins.
  4. 14. Samuel Chesley born abt. 1691; married Ann Daniel.
  5. Martha Chesley born 1689; married Samuel Davis; d. at age of 102.

5

Family of George Chesley of Oyster River New Hampshire

George Chesley (Thomas2, Philip1) made a deposition 7 June 1696, aged 25. His wife’s name was Deliverance _______. He was killed by Indians, 8 June 1710, while on his way to mill. His widow had a grant of land in 1711. Lived near the present village schoolhouse. Thirty acres were laid out to George Chesley, 2 June 1694, “on the north side of Joseph Jones land.” Henry Rice, 1711, willed all his property to “Elizabath Chaslee the onlie Lawfull daughter of George Chaslee deceased lat of oyster river,” and Deliverance Chesley was named as executrix, but she renounced her right in favor of James Jackson, the deceased’s son-in-law. This suggests that Deliverance was daughter of Henry Rice. He had a grant of 33 acres, 23 June 1701, on the south side of Oyster River, “near where Capt. Chesley old Mill Formerly stood,” and also near “Basford old Chemble Back.” This was laid out “at the request of his son George Chesley,” 7 Aug. 1735. [See Vol. I of Town Records, p. 35.] I think that widow Deliverance Chesley married (2) Moses Davis, Jr.

  1. 15. George Chesley baptized as adult 21 May 1721; married _______ _______.
  2. Elizabeth Chesley baptized 21 May 1721.

6

Family of Joseph Chesley of Oyster River and Durham New Hampshire

Joseph Chesley (Thomas2, Philip1) married (1) Hannah, daughter of the Rev. John and Mary (Hill) Buss, (2) 18 Dec. 1 717, Sarah, daughter of John and Sarah (Martyn) Cutt of Portsmouth. May 1 1743, Joseph Chesley and James Chesley of Durham sold to their brother, Thomas Chesley, their right in the estate of Valentine Hill late of Dover, “our great grand-father.” [See N. H. Prov. Deeds, XXX. 327, and Buss family.] Joseph Chesley bought of Sampson and Temperance Doe, 26 March 1707, land lying at the water side in Lubberland. This was at the head of Great Bay, and he gave his name to Chesley’s Islands. His will, 13 April 1730 – 7 Jan. 1731, names wife, Sarah, and the following children:

  1. Ensign Joseph Chesley born abt. 1711; married 15 April 1771, Comfort Smith, aged 16. Had one daughter:
    1. Margaret, who married 21 Nov. 1796, Capt. Joseph Chase of Portsmouth.

    3. John Chesley, baptized 23 March 1760.
    4. Elizabeth Chesley, baptized 23 March 1760.

Family of Capt. Samuel Chesley of Oyster River and Durham New Hampshire

Capt. Samuel Chesley's Garrison

Capt. Samuel Chesley’s Garrison
Mentioned in 1707. Torn down 1879

Capt. Samuel Chesley (Philip2, Philip1) married Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Smith. He was selectman in 1703 and captain in an expedition to Port Royal in 1707. He was slain by Indians while at work in the woods, 17 Sept. 1707. He had a grant of land, 30 May 1697. His widow married Amos Pinkham. “The late Capt. Chesley’s garrison” is mentioned 29 Sept. 1707, which stood a few rods southeasterly of Dea. Winthrop S. Meserve’s house at the present date. He had son, Joseph, and probably other children, as follows:

  1. Joseph Chesley. He had wife, Hannah, 20 Feb. 1730-1, estate administrated 1740.
  2. Reuben Chesley. Had wife, Ann, and later wife, Margaret. Lived in Madbury, 1758.
  3. Keziah Chesley, baptized 10 Dec. 1727 as “singlewoman”; married probably, Timothy Hanson. Reuben Chesley and Timothy Hanson and Keziah, his wife, were administrators of the estate of Joseph Chesley, late of Dover, in 1740.
  4. Samuel Chesley. The History of the County of Annapolis, Nova Scotia, p. 488, says that Capt. Samuel Chesley had a son, Samuel, born 1691, who had a son, Samuel, born 1713, who also had a son, Samuel, born 1734. The last Samuel was at the siege of Louisburg in 1758 and surveyed lots for New England emigrants at Grenville. He married Eleanor, daughter of Samuel Moore. Samuel Chesley induced his brothers, Joseph and Benjamin, to go to Nova Scotia. Joseph soon returned to New Hampshire, but Benjamin settled in Wilmot, N. S., near the present site of Middleton. I mistrust that there is one too many Samuel Chesleys in this line of ancestry. The Joseph, brother of Samuel, here mentioned, may be the Joseph Chesley who settled in Windham, Maine, and there married 25 Dec. 1766 Abigail Graffam and had a large family, or it may be the Joseph Chesley, born in Durham 1744, who married Sarah Drew and settled in Industry, Maine, where he died in 1827, aged 84. [See History of Industry.]

8

Family of James Chesley of Oyster River and Durham New Hampshire

James Chesley (Philip2, Philip1) was killed by Indians at same time as his brother, Capt. Samuel, 17 Sept. 1707. Pike’s Journal says, “Octo. 14, 1705, Sab: Sarah Chesley (formerly Huggins) the wife of James Chesley of Oyster River, died after 4 days sickness with malig: feaver.” Dover records say that he married Thamsin Wentworth, 29 Dec. 1704. Some error as to dates. She was daughter of Dea. Gershom Wentworth and married (2) Dea. John Hayes and had eleven children. James Chesley had one son:

  1. 17. James Chesley born 18 May 1706; married Mehitable Waldron, (2) Lydia Home.

9

Family of Lieut. Philip Chesley of Oyster River and Durham New Hampshire

Lieut. Philip Chesley (Philip2, Philip1) born about 1676, as a deposition shows, “aged about seventy seven years” in 1753. married in Wells, Maine, 8 July 1706, Hannah, daughter of William and Sarah (Littlefield-Wells) Sawyer of Wells. She was born 9 April 1785 and was baptized by the Rev. Hugh Adams, as wife of Lieut. Philip Chesley, 1 Nov. 1719, and received into the church 24 May 1724. She is named as Hannah Chesley in the will of her father, 1718, with “two oldest sons, Joshua and Paul,” evidently an error. Philip Chesley is called captain in 1707. He sold land, in 1731, to “two eldest sons,” Lemuel and Joshua. In 1737 he sold to Lemuel Chesley land “granted to my grandfather, Philip Chesley.” In 1756 he sold land to “Winborn Adams, Chirurgeon.” In 1742 Philip and Hannah Chesley, Ichabod and Temperance Chesley, Jonathan and Mary Chesley sold land in Rochester to Peter Hayes. Another deed shows that they were brothers. Philip Chesley lived on the old Chesley farm.

He left 150 acres in the homestead, half of a saw mill, 200 acres in Nottingham, 240 acres in New Durham, and three fourths of the fourth division in Rochester, etc. Widow Temperance Chesley was taxed in 1777, 1783 and 1786. Children were:

12

Biography of George Chesley of Oyster River New Hampshire

George Chesley, (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1), I think him to be the “bachelor” baptized by the Rev. Hugh Adams, 24 Dec. 1721, and the one who was killed by Indians 24 May, 1724, at the time when Elizabeth Burnham was mortally wounded. Samuel Chesley was administrator of his estate, appointed 2 Sept. 1724, and declared in the probate records to be brother of George Chesley. The inventory shows thirty acres of land, part of a sawmill at Lamprey River, part of a mill at the Hook, yoke of oxen, boards, etc., the total valued at 154 155. This may be the George Chesley, to whom fifty acres on the north-west side of Lampril River were granted, 23 Jan. 1701. He has been confused with the other George Chesley who was baptized 21 May 1721. One George Chesley had fifty acres of land laid out to him at the Indian Graves, 20 Sept. 1721, a part of the grant to the first Philip Chesley in 1652. James Chesley had another part of the same grant laid out to him 2 Dec. 1721. The Rev. Hugh Adams wrote in his manuscript, “A Particular Faith,” etc., that a young man named George Chesley was killed and scalped by the Indians 24 May 1724.

John Chesley (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1), born about 1690, married about 1717, Hannah, daughter of James and Welthen (Thomas) Huckins. He died in 1719, and his widow married Job Runnels. A coroner’s jury said that John Chesley “was drowned about half an hour after sunset ye 21st of May 1719.” “He went into the water to save two little girls that had been over set in a canoe.” Two children:

His uncles and aunts sold to George Chesley, “our loving cousin,” 4 Aug. 1721, 100 acres near Beech hill, granted to Philip Chesley, the aged. No further trace of him has been found, and nothing is known about his wife. It is certain that his place was inherited by a son, George.

1 thought on “Genealogy of the Chesley Family of Durham New Hampshire”

  1. I found a couple tin type photos at an estate sale the other day. After bringing them home I pulled one out of the folding pocket case. It had a name written on the back “Jefferson Chesley” Could very well be the Jefferson Chesley in this family tree.
